Lindstrand created a new approach to fighting tunnel fires by designing an inflatable tunnel plug: a structure which seals the tunnel, thus cutting off the flow of air to the fire and depriving it of the oxygen it needs to burn. Moreover, this device also inhibits the spread of smoke and, in the case of potential terrorist attack, any other harmful agents in the air. When not in use, inflatable tunnel plugs are pre-positioned in a deflated state at 100m intervals in the tunnel and, in the event of a fire, are inflated by remote control using encrypted high frequency transmissions. Therefore this system has the added advantage that all operations can be handled at a distance from the fire, and with much less danger to the firemen’s lives.
Inflatable tunnel plugs provide an affordable and effective solution for fire extinguishing in tunnels. They can be installed in the shortest time with minimum tunnel preparation. Inflatable tunnel plugs function independent of other tunnel services and can be automatically deployed quickly when necessary. Full scale tunnel fire testing has been conducted at the Brenner Pass in Italy and in the Hague in Holland. Both tests proved the ability of the plug to extinguish the fire in minutes with no damage to the tunnel. Lindstrand has since installed inflatable tunnels plugs in the Victoria Line of the London Underground.
Recognising the increased danger in recent years of major flooding caused by the effects of global warming, especially in parts of the world like South East Asia, Lindstrand, always at the forefront of innovation in fabric engineering, has developed innovative, efficient, mobile and cost effective approaches to fighting floods and helping prevent the severe damages caused by them. The recent inventions include Inflatable Flood Barriers, which act as temporary walls and can be erected in minutes upon demand, and Self- Adjustable Flood Installation, which contours the buildings to substitute the old and complicated method of using sandbags against the flood. Both of the systems’ design is simple and convenient since floods occur with minimum warning and the flood defence systems may have to be installed in appalling weather conditions.
Lindstrand manufactures impressive and award winning bespoke inflatable structures, which can be used for hosting temporary events and exhibitions. Having outstanding aesthetic appeal, bespoke inflatable buildings are just as easy to erect, transport and store as standard pneumatic structures. The inflatable buildings can be made in 20 standard colours, but customized colours can be produced if requested. Custom artwork can be applied in the form of either digital printing or vinyls. From virtual artist’s impression to the finished article, the Lindstrand team can create a variety of geometric shapes, not matter how complex.
